The Sarnia Police Bicycle Blitz concluded on May 25th, with over 150 charges being laid in the one week period. Charges included many common Highway Traffic Act Offences like Stop Sign and Intersection Infractions. The two most common offences were riding on sidewalks (50) and riding through Crosswalks (40). Cyclists need to understand that they must obey all the rules of the road that motorized vehicles do.
The vast majority of people ticketed were provided an option to take a bicycle safety course in lieu of fines. Persons choosing this option must successfully complete a 4 hour course before the charge is withdrawn.
During this week Sarnia Police responded to two bicycle/ vehicle collisions where the cyclist was found to be at fault. Fortunately only minor injuries occurred.
Sarnia Police plan to continue to get the word out to both cyclists and motorists through a combination of enforcement and education in an effort to reduce the number of bicycle/vehicle collisions and to keep everyone safe.
