The Sarnia Police Service received information of another scam that seems to have reared its ugly head. A local individual received a call recently from someone claiming to be from the Canadian Immigration Centre (CIC). The individual was then told that unfortunately their Canadian Citizen Status was unconfirmed and that they had two options.
The first involved a factious record number to contact the RCMP to have the matter investigated. The second option, which supposedly would have been the quickest method, was to forward a payment to the CIC and speak to a supervisor to clear up the situation immediately.
Fortunately, the individual didn’t get caught up in this scam and contacted the police as a FYI. He was immediately clued in by the fact that this caller had no idea of where he (the complainant) was born or from.
Again, we remind people to take the time to verify situations like this with the actual agencies and seek out the phone numbers via phone book or computer and not use the number given to you by the suspect over the phone. Also, CIC should stand for Canadian Immigration & Citizenship.
