Broadcast time: 10:05 am

Date: June 30, 2016

Sarnia Police are reminding the community to have a safe Canada Day. The official festivities will be held on Friday, July 1, 2016 with the start of the Canada Day parade. The parade route along Lakeshore Road between Colborne Road and the Cathcart Boulevard entrance to Canatara Park will be closed starting at 10:30 a.m. Vehicle entry into Canatara Park from both the Cathcart Boulevard and Sandy Lane entrances will be restricted starting at 10:30 a.m. and will last until the parade participants are clear of the park. During the day Canada Day activities will be held in Canatara Park.

We are asking the public for their assistance tomorrow in the parks. Please lock your vehicles and place valuables out of sight. The Sarnia Police Service will be in attendance monitoring activity but we are also asking members of the public to contact the police if they see anything suspicious in the parks. There has been an increase of thefts from motor vehicles in the area of Canatara Park and the Sarnia Police will need your help to ensure that we continue to keep the Day safe for everyone as we have in the past.

Regarding bikes, the Bluewater Trails Committee will be setting up and monitoring a bike corral so people can park their bikes and alleviate worries that they will be stolen.

The evening fireworks display will occur in the area of Sarnia Bay. Front Street will be closed to traffic between Exmouth Street and London Road starting at 7:00 p.m. Sarnia Police will have a Command Post set up on Front Street.

Please be patient when driving in the area. Please obey No Parking signs and obey volunteers who assist with traffic control to ensure the safety of the public. Keep in mind the hundreds of pedestrians that will be in the area for the day and evening hours, drive slow and use caution in the area of the celebrations.

A zero tolerance policy will be taken by Sarnia Police Service when it comes to traffic laws, unruly patrons and liquor license violations. In the past few years, Canada Day attendees have enjoyed the family atmosphere of the many events hosted by the city.

Also, the Sarnia Police Service Records Department will be closed on Friday, July 1, 2016 and will not re-open until Monday, July 4, 2016. There will be no records checks or freedom information available.
