Originating Service: Anishinabek Police Service – Kettle Point Detachment
Date of Release: January 20, 2016
On January 18, 2016, just shortly after 6:00PM, the Anishinabek Police Service located and arrested a 29 year old male from Kettle Point First Nation. The man was WANTED on an outstanding warrant. Upon arrest the man was transported to the Kettle Point Detachment and secured in custody to await a bail hearing.
While at the Kettle Point Detachment the male became violent and assaultive towards Police.
After numerous attempts to communicate and deescalate the situation the CEW (Taser) was deployed. Given the close proximity of and the ongoing assaults taking place against the officers, the CEW was ineffective in the attempts to safely end the conflict.
During the struggle it became apparent that the prisoner had in fact concealed an edged weapon. The prisoner produced a small knife and while displaying it, moved towards the officers. The officers continued their communication attempts in order to resolve the situation and were able to safely exit from the holding cell.
Assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police – Lambton Detachment was requested to respond to the scene. The officers continued for almost 3 hours to communicate with the prisoner and just before 3:30AM he was safely removed from the cell with the knife being seized without further incident.
Lambton Paramedics attended to the scene and transported the male to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Paramedics also attended to and treated one of the initial officers for minor injuries.
The accused remains in custody and is now before the courts to face a number of charges in Sarnia.
