Broadcast time: 8:47 a.m.

Date: September 4, 2015

The Sarnia Police Service is reminding motorist that students will be returning to school next Tuesday September 8, 2015. At this time of year our city streets will be busier once again. Drivers should prepare for the return of school buses, crossing guards, a higher volume of children walking on the streets and parents dropping off and picking up their children.

Drivers need to be cautious and take extra care on the road. By modifying driving habits, motorist can affect pedestrian safety and reduce child pedestrian injuries.

Be aware of school zone signage and reduce your speed in school zones. New laws require motorist to wait until crossing guards are completely off the roadway before they can proceed.

Be patient. Children may cross the street slowly or change their mind and turn back. Give them ample time to cross safely. Give yourself extra travel time if you commute through school areas.

Watch for school buses. Traffic in both directions must stop for school buses with flashing overhead red lights activated and the stop arm activated. Failure to do so can result in a $490.00 fine.

If you are driving children to school, drop them off in a safe area away from traffic.

Be observant when approaching parked cars in a school area. Children are difficult to see between parked cars and may dart out into traffic. By scanning the area and reducing speed you allow greater reaction time.

Following these tips will assist drivers during this busy back to school time and help keep our kids safe.
